What is rehabilitation, and who needs it?

Rehabilitation is structured treatment that helps a person stop using drugs or alcohol and rebuild daily life. Doctors call the underlying condition substance use disorder. NIDA describes addiction as a chronic, relapsing brain disorder, which is why willpower alone rarely works and why detox on its own is not treatment.

Rehab is usually needed when use continues despite harm, earlier attempts to stop at home have failed, or the person also has depression, anxiety or another mental health problem. Families often wait too long because of stigma. Our guide to common rehab misconceptions answers the fears we hear most.

Treatment of less than 90 days is of limited effectiveness for residential or outpatient programmes, and longer treatment is often indicated. Medical detoxification, NIDA adds, is only the first stage of addiction treatment.

Signs that a person may need rehab

  • Using more, or more often, and failing to cut down
  • Withdrawal symptoms when the substance wears off
  • Missed work, secrecy, money problems and broken promises
  • Mood swings, poor sleep, anxiety or low mood that keep returning
  • Earlier attempts to stop at home that ended in relapse
  • Family tension, lost trust and unsafe behaviour

Why a residential setting helps

In-patient care removes easy access to the substance and the triggers around it. A structured daily routine, medical monitoring and a team on site give early recovery a safe base. See how our structured daily routine runs.

It also gives the family a break from crisis mode, so they can take part in counselling instead of firefighting.

Call 999 or go to the nearest hospital if the person cannot be woken, is breathing slowly or not at all, has a seizure, chest pain or severe confusion.

Withdrawal from some substances, such as alcohol and sedatives, can be dangerous. Never lock a person in a room to force them to stop. Get medical help. For other substances, see our drug addiction treatment page.

The 4 stages of rehabilitation at Golden Life BD

Medical care comes first, then the work that keeps recovery in place. Each stage builds on the one before it.

Stage 1: Assessment

A BMDC-registered doctor assesses the patient, including any depression or anxiety, and writes the plan and cost in writing.

Stage 2: Detox

Medical detoxification runs in the first two to three weeks with 24-hour monitoring and a daily phone update to the family.

Stage 3: Therapy

Individual and group counselling, CBT-based work, psychiatric review and structured family counselling.

Stage 4: Aftercare

A written relapse-prevention plan, agreed with the family before discharge, and scheduled follow-up.

Medical detoxification and withdrawal management

Withdrawal management means a doctor monitors symptoms and treats them safely. Detox at Golden Life BD runs under 24-hour monitoring with a BMDC-registered doctor in charge. Read more about our medically supervised detox.

Detox clears the substance from the body, but it does not change habits or triggers. That is why it is followed by months of therapy.

Dual diagnosis and psychiatric care

Many patients also live with depression, anxiety, trauma or poor sleep. Our consultant psychiatrist treats these alongside the addiction, because treating only the substance use leaves the underlying problem in place.

Learn how dual diagnosis care works.

Rehab center admission requirements in Dhaka: how it works

Seven steps, from the first call to going home. Meet our team and experience or read the full treatment procedure.

Admission at Golden Life BD runs in seven steps: a free call, a visit, a medical assessment, document checks, a written plan and fee, supervised detox, then therapy and family work that ends in a relapse-prevention plan. The programme lasts at least four months. Families can start the process, and our guide on how to convince a loved one to accept rehab helps with the conversation.

2

Visit before you decide

See the rooms, kitchen and medical room at House 33, Block-F, Road 4, Kalwalapara, Mirpur-1. No appointment is needed.

Methods and therapies in our psychiatric rehab programme

Medical care first, then the work that keeps recovery in place.

Our rehabilitation programme combines medical detoxification, counselling and group therapy, with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to identify triggers and change thinking patterns. Psychiatric evaluation, family counselling and a written relapse prevention plan complete the programme.

Medically supervised care

24-hour nursing, doctors on call 24/7 and medical assistants monitoring patients through detox and withdrawal.

Counselling, CBT and trigger mapping

Individual and group sessions on identifying triggers and planning for the people, places and situations that pull a person back.

Psychiatric rehab

A consultant psychiatrist reviews patients with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder or severe insomnia alongside the addiction.

About 40 to 60 per cent of people treated for substance use disorders experience relapse, a rate NIDA compares with other chronic illnesses. That is why treatment continues beyond detox and ends with a written aftercare plan.

Five questions to ask any rehab centre

  • Can I see the trade licence and narcotics-control approval today? You can also check with the Department of Narcotics Control.
  • Which doctor writes the plan, and what is their BMDC number?
  • Who is awake and on duty at 3 a.m. during detox?
  • How is my family involved, and how often will you update us?
  • What exactly does the fee include, and is it in writing?

The Department of Narcotics Control is the nodal agency for drug control in Bangladesh, and its Treatment and Rehabilitation wing coordinates and monitors treatment services run by NGOs and private centres.

How your family takes part in recovery

Addiction changes household routines in ways that are easy to miss. Treatment changes the household too.

Families do not usually come asking for a treatment package. They come to find out whether everything can still be fixed. In almost every case the answer is yes, though not by trying harder at home.

— Dr. Mufassir Husain Sohel, addiction medicine, Golden Life BD

Family counselling runs in structured sessions, and we phone the family every day during detox. Read how the family helps treatment succeed.

Daily detox update

We phone the family every day during detox, so you are not left guessing.

Family counselling

Structured sessions on talking about substance use without a fight, and on where boundaries go.

What helps

Calm, specific conversations, clear money boundaries and consistent follow-through.

What to avoid

Covering for missed days, paying debts quietly and giving ultimatums in anger.

Relapse prevention and aftercare. Relapse is most likely in the first weeks at home, so we prepare you for it before discharge. You leave with a written plan, scheduled follow-up and a way to reach us quickly. No centre can promise a result, and outcomes vary from person to person.

FAQs about the best rehabilitation treatment center in Dhaka

Straight answers on stages, duration, cost, detox and admission.

A doctor assesses the patient and writes a plan, then admission begins. Medically supervised detox takes the first two to three weeks, followed by individual and group counselling, psychiatric review where needed and family sessions. Days follow a structured routine of meals, therapy, rest and recreation. The programme ends with a written relapse-prevention plan agreed with the family before discharge.
At Golden Life BD the minimum stay is four months, with detox in the first two to three weeks. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) says residential or outpatient treatment of less than 90 days is of limited effectiveness, and that longer treatment is often indicated. The doctor reviews progress, so some patients need more time. The final length is agreed with the family.
At our centre they are assessment and admission, medically supervised detox, therapy with family counselling, and relapse prevention with aftercare. NIDA states that medical detoxification is only the first stage of addiction treatment and by itself does little to change long-term drug use, so the later stages carry most of the work of recovery.
Addiction is a chronic condition, so cravings, stress, old friends and familiar places can pull a person back. NIDA reports that 40 to 60 per cent of people treated for substance use disorders relapse at some point, similar to rates for asthma and hypertension. Relapse means the plan needs adjusting, not that treatment failed. Every patient leaves with a written plan and follow-up.
At Golden Life BD, packages cost BDT 80,000 to BDT 2,00,000 in total over the four-month programme, roughly BDT 20,000 to BDT 50,000 a month depending on the room. Fees are paid monthly. Meals, supervised detox, therapy, family counselling and follow-up are included, and you receive the full cost in writing before admission. Prices elsewhere vary, so always ask what is included.
A BMDC-registered doctor leads detox, supported by 24-hour nursing and medical assistants. At Golden Life BD, Dr. Mufassir Husain Sohel (BMDC A-26981) leads detox protocols and writes the medical plan, and a consultant psychiatrist reviews patients who also have depression or anxiety. Detox should not be attempted alone at home, because withdrawal can be dangerous for some substances.
Yes. Families usually make the first call and start the process. We ask for the patient's and guardian's National ID copies, four passport photos, earlier treatment papers and personal clothing, and a missing paper never delays an urgent admission. A doctor assesses the patient first, and we explain the programme honestly. We admit male patients only.
No honest centre can promise a fixed success rate, because outcomes depend on the person, the substance and the support at home. NIDA reports that 40 to 60 per cent of people treated experience relapse, and that many others recover and stay well. Longer treatment, family involvement and aftercare improve the odds. Results vary from person to person.

Your next step: a confidential call-back

Choosing the best rehabilitation treatment center in Dhaka comes down to three things: care that is medical, long enough and shared with the family. Detox needs a doctor, recovery needs months rather than days, and you do not need to be certain before you call. Speak to us through our contact page today.
